My 2021 travel wishlist

Views from Brooklyn Bridge

Well 2020 has been a strange year indeed. Never again will I take my freedom for granted. Whilst we’re not in the clear yet from Coronavirus, but with the vaccine already being administered, I’m hopeful that 2021 will be a better year in terms of being able to travel.

Not being able to travel freely has made me yearn to travel again! I’ve spent a fair bit of time daydreaming about where I want to visit next year, so here’s my 2021 travel wishlist.

The Cotswolds

Usually our first trip of the year takes place during the New Year break, but with being in Tier 4 that means no travel unfortunately. For Christmas, I bought my husband a weekend away to The Wild Rabbit in the Cotswolds in March so this might be our first trip of 2021. Here’s hoping it all goes to plan!

Seville in Spain

We were planning on visiting Seville for Easter but a 6 week national lockdown scuppered those plans so here’s hoping we can go in 2021! It just looks so beautiful, plus the weather will hopefully be quite nice which after months of cold weather will be very welcome. I can’t wait to sip on Sangria in the sunshine whilst people watching. I think a little boat ride on this canal in Plaza de Espana is going to be a must!

Lucca in Tuscany

My cousin is getting married at the end of May in Lucca in Tuscany and I am so excited! I’ve never been to Lucca, which looks absolutely stunning with its Renaissance walls and cobbled streets. I’ve only been to Tuscany twice, for a mini-moon after we got married in Bologna and for a birthday weekend in Florence, and I’ve been wanting to go back ever since. We’ll make a long weekend of it so that we have time to explore Lucca a bit more. We also have to fly in to Pisa so I’m hoping to visit the leaning tower and snap a cheesy photo.

Bologna in Emilia-Romagna

My husband is from Bologna and we got married here so it has a special place in my heart. Sadly I’ve not visited in about three years but we have a wedding here in June so I am so excited to be going back! I can’t wait to visit Piazza Maggiore, the two towers – and this time I want to climb up them! – and of course eat all the delicious food. Since I last visited there is now an Eataly. I love visiting Eataly when we’re in the US but I’m not sure how I feel about there being one in the culinary capital of Italy…. I shall report back!

Cefalù in Sicily

For our summer holiday we always go somewhere in Italy (this is what happens when you marry an Italian). In 2018 we went to Cefalù for the first time and I absolutely loved it. I would really like to go again and combine it with Messina, which we’ve not been to before. Cefalù has the most amazing sunsets and I can’t wait to sit on the rocks with an Aperol Spritz in hand and watch the sun go down.

A safari in South Africa

We were meant to have gone on a luxury safari this year for my birthday but of course that didn’t quite go to plan so we have booked it for November 2021 and I am so excited!! It has been many years since I’ve been on safari and certainly never a luxury one. We will be combining our safari with one of our favourite cities in the world – Cape Town! It will have been four years since we’ve been back to South Africa so I sincerely hope this holiday goes ahead as I really miss my home country.

New York

Although we’ve been to New York fives times, it’s a city we can never get bored of. We love to go for New Year and I hope we’ll be able to see in 2022 in the Big Apple! We have lots of traditions we like to do, such as walk across Brooklyn Bridge, visit Central Park, walk around Grand Central Station and walk along the High Line but there’s always something new to discover. Next time I’d like to explore Brooklyn and Queens more and I definitely want to visit The Vessel again!

I really hope that 2021 is the year that we can travel more freely – and safely, of course. I’ve missed travel so much although in some ways not being able to travel has made me appreciate it so much more.

Where would you like to travel to in 2021?

Ah Kirsty – reading this brings back memories of great holidays. I’m so sorry you didn’t get to go to South Africa on your safari…just think….it will be even sweeter when you do. I’d love to go back to New York – and take the kids with us next time. We were supposed to go to LA, a cruise to Mexico and Las Vegas last year – oh and to Ljubljana too, but I’m really hoping that if it’s not this year – it will definitely be 2022. x

Thanks Lauretta and I’m sorry all your plans got cancelled too. I think we’ll all appreciate travel so much more when we finally get to travel again! Your travel plans sound amazing! We spent a New Year in Ljubljana and loved it.
