The Whitney is a luxury boutique hotel located in the beautiful, historic Beacon Hill neighbourhood. It stands on the crossroads of Charles Street and Cambridge Street and is mere steps from the Red Line MBTA (Charles/MGH stop). It’s a fantastic location to explore Boston.
We stayed over New Year, so the hotel still had all its Christmas decorations up, giving it a really festive feel. One of the reasons we chose The Whitney was because we wanted a room with a bath, and they were one of the few Boston hotels we could find that offered a bath.
Disclosure note: We paid for our stay ourselves, and this is an honest review of The Whitney. Note that this post does contain affiliate links, which may earn me a small commission but at no cost to you.
Getting to The Whitney from Boston Logan International Airport
Boston Logan International Airport is located a mere 3 miles or 5 km from The Whitney. It is possible to get public transport but it’s not a direct route. We opted to just get a taxi when we arrived, which took about 20 minutes and cost around $40 with a tip. On our return, we got an Uber which was cheaper and took around 15 minutes as there wasn’t any traffic. For a hassle-free trip, get a taxi or Uber. The hotel can also book your transport for you.
The location
This was our second time in Boston. The first time we visited we stayed at The Taj, which is now The Newbury, opposite Boston Common. Despite it being around the corner from Charles Street, we never ventured that way – which is a shame as it’s a gorgeous street packed full of independent shops, restaurants and cafes.
The Whitney is located at the end of Charles Street so it’s great to walk the whole street to get to Boston Common. It’s also located in walking distance of North End, where Little Italy is. And then Harvard University is just three stops on the Red Line, right opposite the hotel. It’s really the perfect location.
Hotel overview of The Whitney
The Whitney has 65 rooms, including four suites, over 5 floors. They are a pet-friendly hotel and pets under 23 kg can stay for a fee. Sadly we didn’t spot any pets during our stay! There is a 24 hour gym and complimentary bicycles (probably not so popular in Winter!). There is also free WI-FI, newspapers and complimentary cartons of water, cans of soda and little packets of chocolate chip cookies available on every floor.
The lobby features the reception desk, a lovely fireplace and seating area, which leads on to a bar and their restaurant, Peregrine.

When we checked in we were offered a glass of Prosecco or juice, which is a lovely touch – especially as many luxury 5 star hotels don’t offer this.

Peregrine is an Italian-inspired restaurant serving Mediterranean dishes. It’s open at 7 am until 10 am for breakfast, then lunch is served from 11 am to 3 pm, and dinner from 5 pm. There is in-room dining too for guests. We didn’t actually eat at Peregrine, we just had a coffee at the bar counter one morning. It is a lovely space though – great art and decor!

They also have an outdoor courtyard, leading off from Peregrine, which has an outdoor fireplace. It was freezing when we stayed so we didn’t venture outside to see it, however we did see people having a drink outside one night and, with the fireplace, it looked very cosy!
One thing I loved about The Whitney was all the artwork on display. I particularly liked this painting at the end of our hallway, leading to our suite. Sometimes luxury hotels can lack a bit of character – not The Whitney.

Our room: Premium King Suite
As mentioned earlier, we booked The Whitney because it was one of the few luxury hotels we could find that had rooms with a bath. If you want a room with a bath, you need to book a Mobility Accessible guestroom. We opted for the Mobility Accessible Premium King Suite.
The room was really large, at 500 square feet, with a separate lounge area. I have to say, we were pleasantly surprised at how spacious it was, as New York’s hotel rooms tend to be much smaller. Last year we stayed at the fabulous Ludlow hotel in New York in one of their bigger rooms and that was only 325 square feet, so this room felt ultra spacious.

A really nice touch was the bottle of red wine and note from the manager that was left for us in the lounge area. I also liked that they chose a US wine, from Oregon, rather than European or South American.

There was a small mini bar in the lounge with a selection of drinks from a local distillery, called Bully Boy Distillers. Great that they promoted a local business! There’s no fridge in the room, however near the elevator on every floor is a fridge drawer which contains ice and cans of tonic water, ginger beer and club soda – which are all free. They also have fruit and little packets of Tate’s chocolate chip cookies that you can help yourself too – which were delicious!
If you have medication or anything that needs refrigerating, you can request a fridge in your room.

There is also a Nespresso coffee machine (free) with a small mini bar of snacks (not free), which is built in to the very small wardrobe. There are complimentary still water cartons that are left in your room by housekeeping, or you can ask reception for one at any time. In the morning, there’s free ‘to go’ coffee available from the bar at Peregrine in the lobby.

The room has all the mod cons, such as blinds that you operate with a switch and – my favourite – USB plug points right next to the bed. Saves having to bring over a travel adapter!

The bedroom was large, and had a lot of floor to ceiling windows. Unfortunately we were facing the MBTA station and the crossroads, and we were only one floor up from ground level (although confusingly we were on the third floor) so we had to keep the blinds closed. Sadly no view for us. It didn’t really bother us but if it’s important to you, perhaps check with the hotel before booking.
The bed was huge and very comfy. I also love the details, like the monogrammed throw and pillow. I also liked the artwork around the room, which pays homage to Boston’s history. The decor is muted tones but very modern and stylish.

We love to walk everywhere when we visit a city (it’s the best way to see everything!) so we clock up thousands of steps. A bath at the end of the day really helps ease those sore muscles!! The bath was a bit on the shallow side, however I reminded myself that it’s probably like that because it’s a mobility suite.

The bathroom is stocked with products from the Grown Alchemist, which is an Australian brand. From a sustainability perspective, I would’ve preferred that they used US products – or even better, a Boston brand – but they were lovely products nonetheless.
There were also dressing gowns and slippers, providing both comfort and luxury.

All in all, we were very happy with our room. Yes, the view could’ve been much better but the room was really spacious, comfortable and clean.
What we loved about The Whitney
The location was perfect for us. The staff were really friendly and helpful. We loved the little touches, such as a glass of Prosecco on arrival, free cookies, and the welcome wine left in our room. They also have some deals with neighbouring shops, spas and restaurants, called the Neighborhood Passkey, where you can get discounts by showing your keycard.
What we didn’t love about our stay
Sadly our room had the worst view, overlooking the MBTA station. Because it was very close to ground level, it meant that we had to have the blinds closed all the time. Being on a lower floor also meant it had some traffic noise. We sleep with a white noise App so it wasn’t an issue for us. Plus, it’s a city so you’d probably find this at every hotel! Despite the room being very large, there was a tiny wardrobe to hang up clothes. There is a lot of drawer space, however.
Would we recommend a stay at The Whitney?
We would definitely stay at The Whitney again and I absolutely recommend it. If you’re looking for a stylish hotel with mod cons, spacious rooms, and a great location, definitely consider a stay at The Whitney.
