Lunch at Canto Corvino in Spitalfields

My husband used to work near Liverpool Street, which meant that for eight years he never wanted to visit the area on the weekend as it was ‘like being at work’. Now that’s he’s changed companies (and area), I thought it was high time we paid Old Spitalfields Market and Brick Lane a visit. We really wanted to try Enoteca Super Tuscan, as it’s got great reviews and we love going for Italian for lunch on Saturdays. Unfortunately it’s not open on weekends, which is a shame as the area is actually buzzing over the weekend – unlike other parts of…

Exploring Shoreditch

Contrary to popular belief, Shoreditch is not just full of hipsters and over-priced cafes and bars. Although it has in the last twenty years or so gone through gentrification, it’s very multicultural and full of history. We got the Metropolitan line to Liverpool street and started our afternoon with lunch at Canto Corvino, newly opened in Spitalfields. After lunch, we headed to Old Spitalfields Market to browse the stalls. Old Spitalfields Market Apparently there has been a market on the site for over 350 years and in 1991 it became known as Old Spitalfields Market. The market is open seven…

Exploring Bermondsey

We found ourselves in Bermondsey, near London Bridge and Borough, on Saturday having booked a table at Zucca for lunch – UPDATE: which has sadly now closed. It’s not an area we’ve ever really been to before so we were keen to explore it. Walking down Bermondsey Street on our way to the restaurant we noticed lots of really cool independent shops, some quirky cafes and great pubs, restaurants and bars. It certainly seems like a vibrant area to live or work in. There’s even a Fashion and Textile Museum. After an absolutely delicious lunch, we wandered down Bermondsey Street towards…

Lunch at Zucca in Bermondsey

*Update: sad news but Zucca has closed its doors* My husband is Italian, which means most Saturday lunches revolve around eating Italian food. It also means that we are quite discerning when it comes to Italian cuisine and we have high expectations. Although we have our favourites in London, we do like to try new places and Zucca in Bermondsey near London Bridge looked like a good choice given its rave reviews. Thank goodness we booked the day before because the restaurant was full and even though our reservation was fairly late (2:15pm), people kept arriving until after 3 (lunch service…

A long weekend in Berlin

Apart from a stopover in Frankfurt airport en-route from London to South Africa, I’d never been to Germany. So, for my birthday in February I decided this was my destination of choice and my husband booked us a long weekend in Berlin for my birthday present. We stayed at the Ritz Carlton in Potzdamer Platz, which was an ideal location to visit some of Berlin’s historical sites. It’s a short walk away from Checkpoint Charlie, Brandenburg Gate and the very poignant Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. The hotel itself is lovely and our room was quiet, large and luxurious.…
