The best book subscriptions for book lovers

Reposed book subscription

I just adore reading! That’s why a few of my lovely friends bought me a six-month book subscription for my birthday in 2020. It was so exciting when it arrived monthly as I had no idea what the book would be or what else I would receive. One of the things I loved the most about my book subscription was that they often contained books I’m not necessarily sure I would have chosen in a bookshop. I found my horizons expanded! And of the six books I received over the six months, there was only one I didn’t really enjoy.

If you love books, or you have a friend or family member who’s an avid reader, I really recommend gifting yourself or them a book subscription. Here are some great ones to choose from.

Reposed

Reposed is a monthly book subscription which offers everything you need for a good night in – think, a great book, yummy luxury chocolate, a relaxing face mask and some herbal tea or hot chocolate.

They also have a digital book club if you fancy posting a review and discussing that month’s book with fellow book lovers.

The cost: They have a variety of different options so take a look at their website. A pay monthly subscription costs £12.80 and a six month one is £75. Buying a one-off gift? That’s £13.80 for UK delivery.

Bookishly

Bookishly is a monthly book subscription service with a difference in that you can choose different options, such as vintage books, classics or crime thrillers. As they also come with little extras, you can even choose between tea or coffee – I love this as I only drink herbal tea so I’d definitely choose the coffee option!

They have a monthly book club, which ranges between £10 and £13 depending on which genre you’re going for. Alternatively they offer monthly subscriptions starting at 3 months at £39 – this would make a lovely, affordable and incredibly thoughtful gift for a friend or family member!

The cost: From as little as £10 a month and up to £156 for 12 months.

Books that Matter

One of my colleagues recommended Books that Matter as a great book subscription for feminists. Every month there’s a different theme with the aim of enlightening and empowering you. As well as a book written by a female author, you’ll receive at least three products from female creators. What’s not to love?

As well as the subscription box, you can also access an online members book club, attend events with high profile authors and listen to their podcast.

The cost: Books that Matter have a variety of subscription offers so check their website. A rolling monthly subscription costs £17 and six months costs £90. You can also gift a subscription.

Brave Girls Book Club

Brave Girls Book Club is by Books that Matter but is for young female readers aged 7-12. The aim is to introduce them to diverse stories, from female authors, and powerful leading characters to inspire and empower them. These subscription boxes help to fill the gap of under-representation of girls and women in the school curriculum.

There’s a different theme each month and the box comes with an activity pack, a bookmark and 3 to 4 gifts from independent creatives.

The cost: £17 a month

ShelterBox Book Club

The ShelterBox Book Club is a book subscription with a difference! ShelterBox is a charity who works with disaster-hit families around the world, offering them emergency shelter and other essential items to support them in rebuilding their lives. They don’t have a set price for their Book Club subscription but recommend a monthly donation of at least £10 to cover costs and postage, but you can pay more if you wish.

The books are inspired by people and places in the real world, including people who have been helped by ShelterBox in an emergency. When you sign up, you’ll get to vote on three books and then the book with the most votes is what you’ll receive in the post. You can also get involved in their online discussions, including some exclusive Q+As with the authors.

Note that the donation is monthly, however you’ll only receive a book every six weeks. This is great for book lovers who may be time-poor, giving you extra time to finish the book before the next one arrives!

The cost: No set cost but a monthly donation of at least £10 is recommended. There is a slide feature that goes up to £15.

Prudence and the Crow

Are you a vintage book lover? Then Prudence and the Crow is the perfect book subscription service for you! You can even choose your favourite genre, such as classic fiction, thriller, science fiction, poetry… or choose ‘random’ to be surprised! This box is designed to fit through your letterbox so you never need to worry about being in to receive it. Included in the box is a handmade book bag, a library-style card to help you catalogue your collection as well as a surprise, such as a badge, tea, pencil.

The cost: They have lots of different options, from £16 for a one-off box to £96 for six months.
