Years ago my husband and I decided to go to Amersham in Buckinghamshire on a Saturday after my friend Mandy suggested it for a day out. It’s the last stop on one of the branches of the Metropolitan line and only takes about 40 minutes from where we live.
Amersham is a small market town and, as such, there are not a lot of dining options. We chose to eat lunch at a restaurant called The Artichoke. And we’ve never looked back. Over the years this restaurant has seen key moments in our life. We first went before we were even engaged, we went just before we got married and recently we decided to celebrate our second wedding anniversary with a night in Amersham – staying at The Crown and then having dinner at The Artichoke.
The Crown is an old, but modern, coaching inn. We stayed in one of the four poster bed, Courtyard rooms with a fabulous roll top bath.
The Artichoke is run by husband and wife team Laurie and Jacqueline, has won numerous awards and is listed 28th in the Top 50 UK restaurants in the Good Food Guide 2015- and deservedly so. The food, the service and the ambience are all, rather perfect. We chose to splash out on the tasting menu with wine flight.
And as it was our anniversary, we were presented with petite fours to finish the meal off.
If you’re looking for a lovely, relaxing and luxurious weekend away not too far from London, I highly recommend a weekend in Amersham. And if you’re looking for more UK weekend break inspiration, here are five places to go which are not too far from London.
