A boutique stay at Casa Buonocore in Positano

We’ve visited Positano at least three times (might be four but I can’t remember!) and always stayed at the same hotel. This year, five years after our last visit, we thought we’d try somewhere different. After a bit of research, we decided on Casa Buonocore – a boutique hotel. Why? One of the reasons was their beautiful decor. Lots of hotels in Italy, even if they are five star, are quite outdated and old fashioned.

Located on the main road, although 70 steps above road level, it boasts a prime position. It’s a mere 2 minute walk to the centre and because of it’s elevation, it’s very quiet – something that’s really important to us when looking for a hotel. Worried about dragging your luggage up 70 stairs? Don’t worry! Their porter will carry it for you if you let them know when you’re arriving.

Upon arrival, you’re greeted with a warm smile and the gorgeous terrace, where breakfast is served.

The hotel only has six rooms so is small, but perfectly formed. Our room was located on the first floor, above the reception and breakfast terrace. The stairs going up had a lovely sitting area mid-way and was really light and airy – no dark corridors here!

Then, at the top of the stairs just next to our bedroom door was a beautiful book shelf and a seating area with a stunning view of Positano.

Honestly, you can never tire of this view…

Our room

We chose to stay in a deluxe room with a sea view. I couldn’t believe how big the room was! There was huge lounge with a balcony, overlooking Positano with a sea view to the left, and a good sized bedroom with an en-suite bathroom.

Although the balcony wasn’t big, it was perfectly lovely and the view of the coloured houses on the hill was just beautiful. Even though I’ve seen it many times, it never gets old!

The mattress on the bed was very firm and I thought it might be an issue but I slept like a baby every night! Also, the hotel was really quiet which helped too. I just loved the design details – the beautiful headboard, the splash of colour from the cushions and those gorgeous cornices.

The bathroom was a good size, however we would have loved a bath rather than just a shower. Again, I loved the design detail – the shower wallpaper was just stunning. Very luxurious and a bit regal.

The bathroom was well stocked with toiletries, which were replaced when finished. They also have an eco policy where they ask you to consider reusing your towels (we always do) by hanging them up.

There were lovely little touches in our room, such as fresh fruit (pears), bonbons (or ‘confetti’ in Italian) and a whole mini bar that was complimentary.

The room, like the hotel, was bright and airy and full of natural light.

The breakfast

Served every day from 8 to 10 am, you’ll be spoilt for choice with sweet and savoury options. The breakfast changes daily (although there are some regulars, such as the scrambled eggs) and all the cakes are home-made. We’re not big breakfast eaters but we did enjoy a light breakfast every morning.

This was the savoury selection on one of the mornings. I tried the crepe with cheese and ham and it was very yummy.

The tables were set beautifully for breakfast. I loved the crockery! They actually have a shop, at the bottom of the stairs on the road if you want to buy anything to take home with you.

The staff were so friendly and helped us organise a scooter, gave us recommendations and booked our taxi back to the airport. The beauty of staying at Casa Buonocore is that, because it’s small and family owned, you genuinely feel looked after. In fact, I asked where I could buy the bonbons in our room as they were so delicious and was told that they were from a shop near Sorrento. After remarking that it was a bit far to go they kindly offered to give us a box. So when we arrived back later that day, this was in our room… How thoughtful!

We thoroughly enjoyed our four nights at Casa Buonocore and would have no hesitation in recommending it. If you’re looking for a luxury, small, elegant hotel in a great location with wonderful staff then look no further.
